UHMW Overview

UHMW polyethylene is an outstanding choice in material when you need a relatively low cost abrasion, impact, and chemically resistant material.

UHMW is used in extreme wear situations such as hopper liners, conveyer systems, marine fender pads, and sand and gravel movement. UHMW is not UV stabilized and will have a shortened life if used outdoors. For outdoor situations, use IPX UHMW as an alternative.

UHMW-PE (also shortened to UHMW), stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. It’s this extremely high molecular weight that gives UHMW-PE an unsurpassed combination of slickness, toughness and chemical resistance.

It’s a common plastic encountered every day in the form of food containers and many home appliances. Because of its low coefficient of friction, UHMW-PE is self-lubricating; it replaces unwanted grease and oil in many applications such as bearings and conveyors.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved virgin UHMW for use in the food industry. Reprocessed UHMW is not approved for food contact.

UHMW Applications

Typical applications include gears, springs, plates, bushings and housings. The Food and Drug Administration has approved virgin UHMW for use in the food industry. Reprocessed UHMW is not approved for food contact.

• Industrial: conveyor guide rails, belt scrapers, chain guides, suspension wear plates, rider plates, idler rollers, guide shoes, wear strips and shoes.

• Machined Parts: sprockets, wheels, bearings, component parts, pinion gears, flanged rollers.

• Packaging machinery components

• Food processing machinery components

• Idler sprockets, general purpose sprockets/gears

• Chute liners and hopper liners
