This sample pack includes a 6x6" sample of ABS, Noryl, Polycarbonate, and UHMW.
The Impact Strength Resistance Pack features four high impact performance plastics. Impact strength describes a plastic's behavior under impact and relates to how resistant from breaking and cracking a material is, when experiencing a sharp, fast, blunt, and/or hard impact.
A high impact resistance is important in many functional, moving and safety parts to ensure fracture behavior will not occur under extreme everyday operational conditions where the material is being used. Under impact stress, the mechanical energy absorbed by the plastic is transferred from the hard, stiff crystallites into the soft amorphous regions. If their energy absorption capacity is not enough, brittle fracture occurs.
Brittle fracture can be prevented by incorporating impact modifiers, such as elastomers, which are blended into the base material. Under impact stress, the elastomeric regions will absorb additional energy and prevent fracture. The correct impact resistant plastic for your project will vary based on many factors (temperature, humidity, interacting materials, etc.), and there is no material that will outperform any other for all applications.

ABS ABS plastic is an easily machined, tough, low cost rigid thermoplastic plastic with high impact strength, ideal for turning, drilling, milling, sawing, die-cutting, and shearing. ABS plastics provide a balanced combination of mechanical toughness, wide temperature range, good dimensional stability, chemical resistance, electrical insulating properties, and ease of fabrication. ABS applications are extremely broad, falling between commodity plastics and the engineering resins. ABS fills the property requirement for many parts at a reasonable price. ABS has an approximate Impact Strength (Notched Izod at 73°F) of 6.3 ft-lbs/in.
Noryl Noryl is a strong thermoplastic with outstanding strength, stiffness, mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Low moisture absorption and low thermal expansion make Noryl one of the most dimensionally stable thermoplastics available. It is widely used for electrical housings and structural components since it has excellent insulating properties, flame resistance, and dimensional stability over a wide range of service temperatures, and is often selected for fluid handling applications since it has low moisture absorption and excellent strength and stiffness. Noryl is easily machined, fabricated, painted and glued. Noryl has an approximate Impact Strength (Notched Izod at 73°F) of 3.5 - 5.0 ft-lbs/in.
Polycarbonate Polycarbonate is a versatile, tough plastic used for a variety of applications, from bulletproof windows to compact disks (CDs). It comes in transparent and opaque varieties. The main advantage of polycarbonate over other types of plastic is unbeatable strength combined with light weight. Polycarbonate is much lighter than glass, and is nearly unbreakable. Bulletproof windows and enclosures as seen inside banks are often made of polycarbonate. Polycarbonate has an approximate Impact Strength (Notched Izod at 73°F) of 13 - 14 ft-lbs/in.
UHMW UHMW-PE (also shortened to UHMW), stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. It-s this extremely high molecular weight that gives UHMW-PE an unsurpassed combination of slickness, toughness and chemical resistance. It-s a common plastic encountered every day in the form of food containers, milk containers, and many home appliances. Because of its low coefficient of friction, UHMW-PE is self-lubricating; it replaces unwanted grease and oil in many applications such as bearings and conveyors. UHMW-PE has a "No Break" Impact Strength rating, meaning it will pierce though or be cut before breakage occurs. Piercing occurs at approximately (Notched Izod at 73°F) 19 - 34 ft-lbs/in.

Good to compare and contrast. I thought it was a little pricey for what I got, maybe they could provide some extra info.

A good collection of samples, and the price is good but I wish there were a few more materials in this pack because there are other plastics good for impact strength I wanted to test. However on their website there are options to buy individual samples albeit a bit pricey.

Glad interstate includes the Noryl, which we were not aware of, and which seems to work the best for one of our optical imaging tools. Since we have seen that Noryl could be used as a possible replacement for polycarbonate in manufacturing Blu-rays.

I bought this for an AIA project and it was perfect :)
