THERMOFORMINGSAMPLEPK - Overview

This sample pack includes a 12x12" sample of ABS, Styrene, Acrylic, Polycarbonate, Kydex, Polypropylene, Polyethylene (HDPE), Expanded PVC, and PETG. All sample pieces have a thickness of 0.060" with the exception of Expanded PVC, which is 0.118" thick.

Thermoforming plastics are plastics used in manufacturing processes where sheets are heated to a pliable forming temperature, formed to a specific shape in a mold, and trimmed to create a usable product.

ABS
ABS plastic is an easily machined, tough, low cost rigid thermoplastic plastic with high impact strength. It is ideal for turning, drilling, milling, sawing, die-cutting, and shearing. ABS plastics provide a balanced combination of mechanical toughness, wide temperature range, good dimensional stability, chemical resistance, electrical insulating properties, and ease of fabrication. ABS applications are extremely broad, falling between commodity plastics and the engineering resins.

Acrylic
Acrylics have outstanding resistance to long-term exposure to sunlight and weathering. It has excellent optical properties and is more resistant to impact than glass. In addition, acrylic has low water absorption, good electrical resistivity, and fair tensile strength. Applications are infinite, including art installations, outdoor signs, glazing, aircraft canopies, skylights, auto tail-lights, dials, buttons, lighting applications, knobs, and machine covers.

Expanded PVC
Expanded PVC, also known as foamed polyvinyl chloride, has an extraordinary combination of features that make it ideal for signage, exhibits, store displays, POP, kiosks, screen printing and more. The surface is a smooth matte finish that makes it ideal to paint or laminate. Sheets are tough, high-strength and lightweight, and can be ordered in a wide range of sizes, thicknesses and colors.

Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate is a versatile, tough plastic used for a variety of applications, from bulletproof windows to compact disks (CDs). It comes in transparent and opaque varieties. The main advantage of polycarbonate over other types of plastic is unbeatable strength combined with light weight. Polycarbonate is much lighter than glass, and is nearly unbreakable. Bulletproof windows and enclosures as seen inside banks are often made of polycarbonate. Polycarbonate has an approximate Impact Strength (Notched Izod at 73?F) of 13 - 14 ft-lbs/in.

Kydex Product Information [PDF]
Kydex
Superior formability, fabrication and tooling quality makes Kydex^® the best choice for countless projects. Using standard tools, Kydex^® sheets can be drilled, brake formed or punch pressed. Kydex can reduce the number of individual parts needed in many applications, thereby reducing assembly costs. Kydex applications range from aviation and transit interiors, medical equipment and building interiors to furniture and fixtures. Kydex can be used as protection from electrical shock and has multiple equipment housing applications for tools such as electrical welders that require durability and high impact strength. No other thermoplastic sheet stands up to impact, scratches, and gouging like Kydex^®.

Polypropylene
Polypropylene is a high corrosion resistant material which exhibits excellent tensile strength and stiffness at elevated temperatures. Homopolymer polypropylene possesses excellent resistance to organic solvents and degreasing agents as well as electrolytic attack.

High Density Polyethylene
High density polyethelyne (HDPE) sheet exhibits properties of high impact strength, abrasion resistance, and low coefficient of friction. The material is also moisture, stain and odor resistant, and is FDA approved to be used in the food processing industry. The material's durability makes it ideally suited for a variety of applications such as water tanks, chute linings and numerous industrial uses.

PETG
Vivak is the brand and market leader for PETG products. Vivak is a transparent, thermoplastic sheet used widely in the point of purchase industry. Among its advantages, Vivak PETG products offer superior impact strength over Acrylic and cost effectiveness compared to polycarbonate, and offers deep draws, complex die-cuts, and precise molded-in details without sacrificing structural integrity.

Styrene
High impact styrene is used for models, prototypes, signs, displays, enclosures, and more. It can be drilled, sawed, sheared, punched and machined. It can also be painted and has excellent forming properties. Its maximum heat resistance is 180°F and the forming temp is -325°F to 350°F. It meets FDA standards, but is not UV stabilized.
