As per our Shipping and Returns Policy, custom cuts and fabricated parts are non-returnable. If you need an over- or undersized item, note it under "Comments" during Checkout. Cut-to-size orders have an acceptable cut tolerance of 1/8" (0.125"), so clarify if the adjustment is to be made on the (+) or (-) side of the saw blade. Please review our full return and shipping policy here.
Measure Twice, Cut Once
Since custom cuts and fabricated parts are non-refundable, be very careful while measuring your dimensions. As each cut is nominal, even the slightest miscalculation could be costly.
How to Use a Measuring Tape
Extend your tape measure several inches to find the 1 and 2 inch markers. In between the inch markers you’ll find 16 equally spaced tick marks.
Measure by counting the increments beyond the nearest inch. As the increments decrease, so does the length of the mark. For example, 1/2" has a bigger mark than 1/4" which has a bigger mark than 1/8". The smallest mark follows at 1/16". Please be aware that some measuring tapes may have even smaller increments.
Features of a Measuring Tape: Sliding End Hook
The sliding end hook is designed for two different types of measurements. An outside measurement (where the hook of the tape hangs over an edge), requires the hook to slide out a bit to account for the thickness of the material. When making an inside measurement (where the hook will push up against a surface), the clip slides in, again, accounting for its thickness. The measuring tape self-adjusts to guarantee an accurate measurement (as far as the tape is concerned).
Sanitizing Acrylic and Polycarbonate Sheet [X]
Acrylic and Polycarbonate Sneeze Guards and like products require special care while cleaning and disinfecting. To maintain the optical clarity of sneeze guards and other acrylic or polycarbonate items, use an acrylic or polycarbonate safe cleaner like Novus Plastic Polish #1, Brillianize Plastic Cleaner, or a mild soap solution.
Please reference the following compatible cleaners when DISINFECTING acrylic and polycarbonate items. The use of commonly available commercial alcohol or ammonia-based disinfectants may cause crazing and damage.
Maximum Impact Strength, Sliding Abrasion & Wear Resistance
Virgin Black UHMW-PE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is a high-performance engineering plastic built for punishing industrial environments. Manufactured from 100% pure, uncompromised virgin resin, it delivers the maximum impact strength and sliding abrasion resistance possible in a UHMW sheet.
When downtime is costly and material failure isn't an option, Virgin Black UHMW provides a slick, self-lubricating, "no-break" surface that routinely outlasts carbon steel by up to 10-to-1. The industrial black pigment naturally hides dirt and grease while offering inherently better UV resistance than natural (white) UHMW.
This Virgin Black UHMW sheet is ideal for high-friction, high-impact applications like:
Industrial purchasers specify Virgin Black over reprocessed or natural grades when an application demands peak mechanical performance and an industrial aesthetic. It is the correct choice if you need:
Maximum Impact Strength: Uncompromised, extra-long polymer chains absorb massive shock loads without cracking.
Superior Wear and Abrasion Resistance: A lower coefficient of friction than reprocessed grades yields a significantly longer service life for high-speed chain guides and wear strips.
Lot-to-Lot Consistency: 100% virgin material guarantees predictable, exact performance across every sheet you order.
Dirt and Grease Masking: Maintains a clean appearance in heavy industrial, agricultural, or mining applications.
Enhanced UV Protection: Withstands direct sunlight better than natural UHMW without immediately yellowing or turning brittle.
Virgin Black vs. Repro & Natural UHMW
When choosing the right UHMW grade, the decision typically comes down to FDA requirements, impact strength, and budget. Important: Black UHMW (both Virgin and Reprocessed) is NOT FDA compliant for food contact.
Choose Virgin Black (This Sheet) when you need maximum impact strength, superior wear life, or enhanced UV resistance for outdoor industrial environments. Because it retains its full molecular integrity, it will not fail under heavy shock loading. The black pigment masks dirt and grease while withstanding outdoor elements much better than natural grades.
Choose Black Repro for a more cost-effective alternative in lighter-duty applications. The recycling process shortens the polymer chains, which measurably reduces the material's overall impact strength compared to virgin grades.
Choose Natural Virgin if your application requires direct food contact. It shares the exact same extreme mechanical properties as Virgin Black, but it is unpigmented and serves as the translucent white industry standard for FDA, USDA, and 3-A dairy compliance.
Virgin Black UHMW is easily machined with common shop and woodworking tools (saw, drill, rout). However, please note the following for precision parts:
Thermal Expansion: UHMW has a high coefficient of linear thermal expansion. We recommend using oversized holes or slotted fastening points in your design to prevent buckling as temperatures fluctuate.
Tolerances: Due to inherent stresses in the material, achieving extremely tight tolerances can be difficult compared to materials like Acetal (Delrin) or Nylon. Use coarse threads or inserts for fastening, as it does not hold fine threads well.
When you order from Interstate Plastics, you're accessing an expansive nationwide network of material expertise. We exclusively source from industry leaders—stocking proven brands like Tivar®, Polystone®, and our own proprietary IPX® advanced wear technology—to ensure premium quality and consistency in every sheet.
Handling: Cut sheets may have sharp edges. We recommend wearing protective gloves when unpacking and handling this material to ensure safety.
Suitability: We take pride in the quality of our materials as they leave our facility. However, because every project is unique, we cannot account for how materials are modified, stored, or used after delivery. Please perform the necessary tests to ensure this material is right for your specific application and end-use conditions.
Friction Coefficient: Extremely low (0.15–0.20 static). Self-lubricating to prevent material buildup and eliminate the need for external grease.
Impact Strength: Rated "No Break" on standard Izod impact tests. Absorbs massive energy without failing.
Abrasion Resistance: Outwears carbon steel 10-to-1 in sliding applications.
Thermal Resilience: Continuous operating range of -155°F to 180°F. Retains impact strength in cryogenic environments.
Moisture Absorption: Near-zero (<0.01%). Will not swell, degrade, or rot in submerged environments.
Chemical Resistance: Highly resistant to most corrosive chemicals, acids, and alkalis (excluding oxidizing acids).
Sound Dampening: Viscoelastic properties significantly reduce noise and vibration from machinery.
*Important Note: Black Virgin UHMW is NOT FDA approved for direct food contact.*
Common Industrial Applications
Note: Black Virgin UHMW is NOT approved for direct food contact.
Marine & Dock Facilities: Heavy-duty dock bumpers, fenders, and wear pads that require maximum impact resistance and UV tolerance.
Bulk Material Handling: Premium liners for high-volume chutes, hoppers, and bins (coal, grain, sand) to promote rapid flow and prevent bridging.
Conveyor Systems: High-speed guide rails, automated chain guides, and industrial wear strips that demand the lowest possible friction and continuous wear life.
Transportation & Heavy Equipment: Dump truck bed liners, snow plow scraping edges, and suspension wear plates subjected to extreme mechanical abuse.
Engineering Limitations & Alternatives
Need a different material profile? Consider these proven alternatives for specific applications:
Need FDA Compliance? Black pigment voids FDA approval. Choose Natural Virgin UHMW for food processing.
Need a Cost-Effective Option? Virgin grade may be over-engineered for lighter-duty tasks. Choose Black Reprocessed UHMW to reduce costs.
Need Structural Rigidity? UHMW is susceptible to "creep" under heavy static loads. Choose Cast Nylon for high-load bearings or gears.
Need Tight Machining Tolerances? UHMW's thermal expansion makes precision difficult. Choose Acetal (Delrin®) for stiff, high-precision parts.
