As per our Shipping and Returns Policy, custom cuts and fabricated parts are non-returnable. If you need an over- or undersized item, note it under "Comments" during Checkout. Cut-to-size orders have an acceptable cut tolerance of 1/8" (0.125"), so clarify if the adjustment is to be made on the (+) or (-) side of the saw blade. Please review our full return and shipping policy here.
Measure Twice, Cut Once
Since custom cuts and fabricated parts are non-refundable, be very careful while measuring your dimensions. As each cut is nominal, even the slightest miscalculation could be costly.
How to Use a Measuring Tape
Extend your tape measure several inches to find the 1 and 2 inch markers. In between the inch markers you’ll find 16 equally spaced tick marks.
Measure by counting the increments beyond the nearest inch. As the increments decrease, so does the length of the mark. For example, 1/2" has a bigger mark than 1/4" which has a bigger mark than 1/8". The smallest mark follows at 1/16". Please be aware that some measuring tapes may have even smaller increments.
Features of a Measuring Tape: Sliding End Hook
The sliding end hook is designed for two different types of measurements. An outside measurement (where the hook of the tape hangs over an edge), requires the hook to slide out a bit to account for the thickness of the material. When making an inside measurement (where the hook will push up against a surface), the clip slides in, again, accounting for its thickness. The measuring tape self-adjusts to guarantee an accurate measurement (as far as the tape is concerned).
Sanitizing Acrylic and Polycarbonate Sheet [X]
Acrylic and Polycarbonate Sneeze Guards and like products require special care while cleaning and disinfecting. To maintain the optical clarity of sneeze guards and other acrylic or polycarbonate items, use an acrylic or polycarbonate safe cleaner like Novus Plastic Polish #1, Brillianize Plastic Cleaner, or a mild soap solution.
Please reference the following compatible cleaners when DISINFECTING acrylic and polycarbonate items. The use of commonly available commercial alcohol or ammonia-based disinfectants may cause crazing and damage.
The UV-Stable Standard for Outdoor & Industrial Durability
Black HDPE is the engineering standard for outdoor and industrial environments. Unlike Natural HDPE, this sheet features a carbon black additive for superior UV resistance, preventing brittleness and cracking from sun exposure.
It is impact-resistant, moisture-immune, and chemically inert—ideal for marine construction, outdoor cabinetry, and wear liners. The opaque black finish naturally conceals dirt, grease, and industrial grime.
Note on Surface Finish: This is an unmasked, industrial-grade plastic. Minor scuffs are normal and do not affect performance. If you require a pristine, textured cosmetic finish (e.g., for visible boat cabinetry), we recommend King Starboard®.
Why Choose Black HDPE?
This sheet is engineered to withstand demanding outdoor and industrial settings. It is the correct choice if your project requires:
UV & Weather Resistance: Formulated with carbon black to resist degradation from sunlight and harsh weather, making it ideal for outdoor use where Natural HDPE would eventually discolor and crack.
Aesthetic Maintenance: The opaque black color naturally hides grease, oil, and grime. This is critical for factory environments where white sanitary sheets would show stains immediately.
Broad Chemical Resistance: Impervious to most acids, solvents, and harsh detergents. Its non-porous surface is immune to moisture, preventing mildew growth and odor absorption.
Thermoforming: Unlike UHMW, HDPE can be heated and vacuum-formed. This makes it ideal for manufacturing complex 3D shapes like automotive dunnage, custom trays, and equipment housings.
Material Selection: Which Polyethylene Do You Need?
Polyethylenes look similar but perform differently. Choose the right grade for your environment:
Choose Black HDPE (This Sheet) for outdoor or dirty environments. Black HDPE is best for outdoor projects, marine parts, or industrial liners where UV stability and dirt- and grease-hiding are critical.
Choose Natural (White) HDPE for FDA Compliance in sanitary or food-contact environments. Best for cutting boards and food chutes. (Note: Black HDPE is not FDA compliant).
Choose Marine Board HDPE for marine environments or marine-grade applications where UV stability is required. (Note: Black HDPE is not FDA compliant).
Choose UHMW for sliding wear. If you need extreme abrasion resistance (e.g., conveyor guides, snow plow edges) or a lower coefficient of friction, UHMW lasts longer than HDPE.
HDPE is non-abrasive and easy to machine using common woodworking tools. It can be cut with standard carbide-tipped saw blades and drilled with standard bits. Note that due to its chemical resistance, HDPE cannot be bonded with standard adhesives, only specialty 2-part epoxies. It must otherwise be mechanically fastened or heat-welded.
When you order from Interstate Plastics, you're accessing an expansive nationwide network of material expertise. Technical Performance
Black HDPE is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic engineered for outdoor and industrial applications requiring high impact resistance, immunity to moisture, and long-term weatherability. It is lighter than water (density ~0.95 g/cm³), allowing it to float, yet rigid enough to serve as a corrosion-proof structural replacement for wood and metal.
UV & Weather Resistance: Enhanced with carbon black, this sheet resists degradation from direct sunlight and harsh weather conditions, maintaining its physical properties where natural HDPE would become brittle.
Moisture Resistance: Extremely hydrophobic with a water absorption rate of <0.01% (near-zero). It prevents rot, mildew, and biological growth, even when permanently submerged.
Impact Strength: Exhibits "No Break" results in standard Izod impact tests. It remains ductile and shatter-resistant even in freezing temperatures (down to -60°F).
Density: ~0.95 g/cm³ (Floats in water).
Regulatory Compliance & Specifications
ASTM Standard: Meets ASTM D4976 (Group 2, Class 1, Grade 5) standards for polyethylene plastics.
RoHS & REACH Compliant: Free from heavy metals and Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC), making it safe for global supply chains and strict environmental audits.
Premium Sourcing: Manufactured by industry leaders like Röchling, Simona, and Vycom, ensuring fully stress-relieved sheets that stay flat during machining and fabrication.

Key Properties
Thermoformability: Unlike UHMW, HDPE can be heated and vacuum-formed. This makes it ideal for manufacturing complex 3D shapes like automotive dunnage, custom trays, and equipment housings.
Weldability: While difficult to glue, HDPE is easily fabricated using thermoplastic welding equipment, allowing for the creation of seamless, leak-proof tanks and fittings.
Chemical Immunity: Highly resistant to corrosive acids, alkalis, and solvents. It is widely used for containing chemicals that would dissolve other plastics or corrode metal.
Electrical Insulation: High dielectric strength makes it suitable for electrical insulators and spacers.
Common Industrial Applications
Liquid Containment: Welded chemical tanks, water storage linings, and agricultural chute liners.
Marine & Outdoor: Structural components like seat backs, battery boxes, spacers, and outdoor cabinetry.
Industrial Protection: Corrosion-proof wall liners, impact plates, and machine guards.
Recreation & Signage: Hockey rink "dasher boards" (puck boards), playground structures, gymnasium kick plates, and golf course signage.
Engineering Limitations & Alternatives
While Black HDPE is versatile, specific environments may require specialized grades:
Food Contact Compliance: Standard Black HDPE is generally not FDA approved for direct food contact due to the carbon black additive. Better Alternative: For cutting boards and food chutes, choose Natural White HDPE (FDA Compliant).
Decorative Marine Finish: While UV stable, industrial Black HDPE has a functional, smooth/matte finish that can show scratches. Better Alternative: For visible boat hatches or cabinetry requiring a textured finish, choose King Starboard® (Marine Grade).
Bonding & Adhesion: HDPE has low surface energy and cannot be bonded with standard epoxies or solvent cements, only specialty 2-part epoxies. Better Alternative: Requires Plastic Welding or mechanical fasteners. If gluing is required, consider PVC or ABS.
High Heat Applications: HDPE has a relatively low melting point. Continuous service temperature is ~160°F (short duration up to ~180°F). Better Alternative: For higher temperature resistance, consider Polypropylene or Nylon.
Extreme Abrasion: HDPE wears faster than Ultra High Molecular Weight polyethylene, especially in conveyor applications. Better Alternative: For wear strips and chain guides, choose UHMW Sheet.
