What is King ColorCore®?

King ColorCore® is a multi-layer high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sheet engineered for high-contrast engraving in signage, marine, playground, and architectural applications. Manufactured using a proprietary PolyFusion™ process, the contrasting color layers are fused into a homogeneous sheet that will not rust, delaminate, or rot when exposed to UV, humidity, or water.

Designed specifically for fast CNC routing and manual engraving, ColorCore® features thin outer cap layers (approximately 0.050" thick on each side) covering a vibrant core layer. Engraving just past the cap reveals high-contrast text and graphics without requiring painting, filling, or laminating.

King ColorCore Color Options

  • Low Maintenance: Does not require painting or refinishing under normal use.
  • UV Stabilized & Waterproof: Environmentally stabilized for demanding outdoor exposure.
  • Easy to Fabricate: Machine and cut effortlessly using standard woodworking tools and CNC routers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you glue or paint HDPE ColorCore?
Gluing and painting are not recommended. ColorCore is designed to resist water and grime, so conventional paints and adhesives generally do not adhere reliably. Use mechanical fasteners where appropriate; specialized plastic-welding equipment and compatible welding rod may also be used for suitable assemblies.
How deep should you engrave HDPE ColorCore?
Check the cap thickness before routing. Engraving approximately 0.075 inch deep normally ensures the contrasting core color is revealed. Final depth should be confirmed on a test piece because results vary with tooling, engraving profile, and the desired appearance.
Does HDPE ColorCore expand and contract with the weather?
Yes. HDPE experiences thermal expansion and contraction at a rate of roughly 1/32" per foot for every 40°F change in temperature. Allow for this movement when mechanically fastening outdoor signs or structures to help prevent stress and buckling.
What tools do you need to cut and fabricate ColorCore?
ColorCore can be cut, drilled, and routed with common woodworking tools and CNC equipment. For routing, sharp carbide tooling is recommended. Test tooling, feed rates, and cut depth on a scrap piece to minimize fuzzing and achieve the desired finish.
Is HDPE ColorCore UV-resistant and truly weatherproof?
Yes. ColorCore is environmentally stabilized for outdoor exposure and will not rust, delaminate, or rot when exposed to UV, humidity, or water. Like any exterior material, evaluate the application, fastening method, and expected thermal movement before installation.
How do you clean graffiti and stains off ColorCore?
For routine dirt and stains, use a suitable household cleaner with a nylon brush or scrub pad, using light pressure to avoid marring the finish. For petroleum-based stains such as grease or oil, citrus cleaner, alcohol, and mineral spirits are suitable options. WD-40® may be used for stubborn grease or oil stains.
Is HDPE ColorCore FDA and USDA approved?
ColorCore is made entirely from FDA- and USDA compliant materials. Food-contact suitability depends on the specific use conditions and applicable regulatory requirements - so confirm the intended application before specifying it for food-processing equipment or direct food contact.
Can ColorCore be used for countertops or high-heat surfaces?
ColorCore is not generally recommended for countertops or high-heat surfaces. Do not subject the sheet to a sustained temperature above 180°F.
Why is ColorCore better than painted wood or laminated PVC?
ColorCore offers a homogeneous, engravable color construction that does not require painting or refinishing and will not rust, delaminate, or rot under outdoor exposure.
Where can you buy custom sheet sizes and color combinations?
We offer standard 48" x 96" sheets across popular primary color combinations. Custom color runs and sheet sizes are available by special request (minimum order quantities apply).
