How to Use the Sheet Yield & Layout Optimizer

Maximizing material usage is critical for reducing costs and improving efficiency in any production environment. Our yield calculator helps you find the most efficient cutting pattern.

This tool is optimized for straight-line partitioning on a table or beam saw. While CNC users may utilize these layouts for safe and effective yields, specialized nesting software may achieve higher density by using staggered or non-linear paths.

Understanding the Inputs

To get the most accurate nesting results, ensure your measurements are precise:

  • Sheet Dimensions: Enter the total usable length and width of your raw material.
  • Piece Dimensions: Enter the final size of the parts you need to produce.
  • Blade Kerf / Bit Diameter: This is the width of the material removed by the saw blade, laser, or router bit during each cut. Ignoring the kerf is a common mistake that can lead to inaccurate yield counts in the shop. Some plastics may require thicker blades to maintain rigidity over long cuts. Common kerf and bit sizes for cutting include:
    • 0.094" (3/32")
    • 0.125" (1/8")
    • 0.156" (5/32")
    • 0.187" (3/16")
    • 0.250" (1/4") - typical CNC router nesting bit

Note: Actual sheet sizes may vary from the manufacturer - some may be slightly oversized. Always measure the sheet and adjust your calculations accordingly before running a high-precision job.

Optimized Cutting Patterns

Unlike basic calculators that simply divide area, our tool runs a nesting algorithm that evaluates several scenarios:

  1. Standard & Rotated Layouts: We check if rotating the pieces 90° allows for a tighter fit.
  2. Hybrid Partition Cuts: The calculator analyzes every 0.5" increment across the sheet to see if a "split" layout (mixing vertical and horizontal orientations) will squeeze out extra pieces.
