High Performance Plastics

Advanced engineering materials designed for Continuous Operating Temperatures (COT) above 300°F (150°C), featuring near-total chemical inertness and superior mechanical stability for mission-critical industrial applications.

For applications requiring specialized fire safety and cleanroom compliance, see our Flame Retardant & FM4910 listed plastics.

The High-Performance Advantage

High-performance polymers sit at the apex of the industrial hierarchy. These materials are defined by a Continuous Operating Temperature (COT) exceeding 330°F, with extreme engineering materials like PBI maintaining integrity up to 600°F.

  • Thermal Stability: COT limits often exceeding 400°F - 500°F.
  • Extreme Chemical Resistance: Near-total inertness to acids, bases, and fuels (notably Fluoropolymers and PPS).
  • Load-Bearing Strength: Superior wear capabilities and physical properties at elevated temperatures compared to engineering plastics.
  • Low Outgassing: Essential for semiconductor, aerospace, and deep-space vacuum environments.
  • Medical Sterilization: Critical resistance to repeated steam, gamma, and ETO sterilization cycles.

Selection by Material Classification

Choosing the right material requires understanding the three core classifications that dictate performance:

  • Semi-Crystalline: (PEEK, PTFE, PPS) Offers a sharp melting point and superior chemical resistance. Ideal for bearing and wear applications.
  • Amorphous: (Ultem®, PESU) Softens over a wide range. Best for structural applications requiring dimensional stability and solvent bonding.
  • Thermoset: (Silicone Resin, Glass Epoxy) Strengthens when heat-formed; cannot be reformed. Offers maximum corrosion and heat resistance.

Understand where your material falls. Our material selection triangle helps engineers identify the transition from standard Engineering Plastics (like Nylon and Delrin) into the High-Performance tier (PEEK, Torlon, Vespel) based on thermal and mechanical loads.

Selection Criteria for Critical Parts

  1. PBI: The highest temperature threshold available (600°F); best for extreme thermal loads.
  2. PEEK: Best all-around mechanical strength, wear resistance, and steam stability.
  3. Ultem®: Superior dielectric strength and flame resistance (UL 94 V-0).
  4. Torlon®: Highest strength of any unreinforced thermoplastic at 400°F+.
  5. Fluoropolymers: The higest standard for non-stick properties and near-universal chemical inertness.
