FM 4910 Approval Standards: Cleanroom Materials Flammability Test Protocol

FM Approvals and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have developed rigorous standards for a wide range of applications. The FM 4910 test illustrates a material's use for low flammability cleanroom uses. A FM 4910 listed designation is commonly found in wet bench manufacturing, semiconductor, and computer chip manufacturing, where contamination from even small amounts of smoke can destroy the integrity of components.

Using low flammability plastics allows manufacturers to partition cleanrooms for different processes, ensuring that damage from fire can be minimized. It also allows for a smarter fire protection system, allowing manufacturers to eliminate sprinkler systems that could destroy equipment unnecessarily. This cost savings is coupled with usually lower insurance costs.

Not only are FM 4910 materials more difficult to ignite, if they do become ignited, FM 4910 plastics produce less smoke and by-products that could contaminate adjacent processes.

Due to the robust testing by FM Approvals, correct usage of FM 4910 materials do not generally require additional fire protection for the processes they protect.

UL94 V-0 Approved Materials: Standard for Safety of Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances

UL 94 (Standard for Safety of Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances Test) is a plastics flammability standard released by Underwriters Laboratories. The test determines a material’s tendency to either extinguish or spread the flame once the specimen has been ignited.

A V-0 classification (UL 94 V-0) indicates that an ignited material stops burning within 10 seconds on a vertical specimen and that drips of particles from the material are not inflamed.

Most FM 4910 approved materials also meet the UL 94 V-0, but the opposite is not always true. This is the case with some plastics engineered to have an extremely high service temperature rating, as is the case with PFA-M sheet and PVDF Kynar FLEX 2850 sheet. Halar ECTFE 901 sheet has the best service temperature available for a material that meets both FM 4910 and UL 94 V-0 classification.
