What Is UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)?

UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is a highly durable engineering plastic with an excellent combination of slickness, toughness, and chemical resistance. UHMW typically has a molecular weight in the millions of grams per mole, far higher than standard polyethylene grades. Its long-chain structure helps give UHMW its excellent abrasion resistance, impact strength, and low-friction performance.

Engineered to handle extreme sliding, impact, and wear applications, UHMW is naturally self-lubricating and offers an exceptionally low coefficient of friction. By substituting standard metals with UHMW, facilities can extend equipment life and lower energy consumption, which helps reduce preventive maintenance costs.

UHMW is moisture-repellent, machinable using common shop tools, and cost-effective for fabricating custom parts—from heavy-duty wear strips to bearings and sprockets.

Interstate Plastics supplies distinct specialty grades of UHMW, including FDA-compliant Virgin UHMW, economical Reprocessed UHMW, Anti-Static grades, IPX 2000®, and Tivar®.

UHMW is also known by industry brand names including IPX®, Polystone®, Tecafine®, Tivar®, Polysteel®, GUR®, Utec®, and Mipelon®.

  • Extreme Durability: Highly resistant to wear, impact, and heavy abrasion

UHMW for Snow Plows & Scraper Edges

UHMW Snow Plows & Scraper Edge Applications

As a heavy-duty, high-impact plastic, UHMW thrives in extreme cold-weather applications ranging from heavy forestry equipment to snowmobile skis and scraper blades. UHMW retains high impact toughness at low temperatures and is well-suited for freezing winter temperatures.

When used for snow plow edges, UHMW operates much more quietly than steel and can help reduce surface marking. Interstate Plastics custom-cuts UHMW sheet to your specific dimensions; its excellent machinability means you can drill mounting holes easily on-site.

Our top-performing plastics for snow plow and scraper applications include UHMW Reprocessed Sheet (an economical, high-wear solution) and IPX 2000 UHMW Advanced Wear Technology Sheet (for maximum abrasion resistance, lowest friction, and built-in UV stabilization).

Top Winter Applications:

  • Snow plow cutting edges, wing liners, and wear components
  • Scraper edges and vat scrapers
  • Bucket lips
  • Skid shoes, skid plates, and skid-steer components
  • Runners and running boards

Frequently Asked Questions About UHMW

What exactly is UHMW?
UHMW stands for Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene. It is an extremely tough engineering plastic with long polymer chains that give it excellent abrasion resistance, high impact strength (even in freezing temperatures), and a naturally low coefficient of friction.
How does UHMW compare to HDPE?
While both belong to the polyethylene family, UHMW generally offers greater abrasion resistance and impact toughness than standard HDPE. HDPE, however, is generally stiffer and easier to weld, thermoform, and fabricate into tanks, liners, and structural components.
Is UHMW FDA approved for food contact?
FDA-compliant UHMW grades are available for food-processing equipment and direct food-contact components. It is a popular choice for food processing equipment and conveyor strips. Reprocessed (black) UHMW is generally not FDA compliant.
What is the difference between virgin and reprocessed UHMW?
Virgin UHMW is made from virgin resin, making it ideal for high-performance and sanitary/FDA applications. Reprocessed UHMW blends virgin resin with recycled UHMW. It provides an eco-friendly, economical alternative with similar friction and wear properties for heavy industrial use where food safety isn't required.
Can UHMW be injection molded or thermoformed?
Standard UHMW stock shapes are not typically injection molded or thermoformed because the material does not flow like ordinary thermoplastics when heated. UHMW stock shapes are commonly produced by compression molding or ram extrusion and then machined as needed.
What is the maximum operating temperature for UHMW?
UHMW is designed for lower-temperature and room-temperature applications. It can operate continuously at up to 180°F (82°C). Higher temperatures will degrade its mechanical strength and wear resistance.
Is UHMW stronger than steel?
No - UHMW does not have the structural rigidity, compressive strength, or load-bearing stiffness of steel and can creep under sustained heavy loads. However, UHMW can outlast carbon steel in many sliding-abrasion applications and certain friction-heavy wear environments.
Can UHMW be glued or bonded?
UHMW is notoriously difficult to bond because it has low surface energy. Mechanical fastening (using screws, bolts, or rivets) is the industry standard. Specialized adhesives or surface treatments may allow bonding; adhesive-backed UHMW tape is another option for thin wear surfaces.
Does UHMW require lubrication?
Generally no - UHMW is naturally self-lubricating, and many UHMW applications operate without added lubrication. Its low coefficient of friction makes it a strong replacement for metal bearings and guide rails in environments where grease would contaminate a product or attract abrasive dust and grit.
Does UHMW absorb water?
UHMW has very low moisture absorption and is highly resistant to swelling in wet environments. This moisture resistance makes it a strong choice for marine applications like dock bumpers, fender pads, and underwater bearing components.
